Mariposa Lily Identification Correction #Wildflowers

When I photographed this wildflower in Idaho I identified it a Calochortus eurycarpus, White Mariposa Lily.   I now think that was an incorrect ID; I believe this is Calochortus bruneaunis – Bruneau Mariposa Lily.   Read on for an explanation of how I changed my mind…

Kudzu – Pueraria montana – Added to USWildflowers Database

Kudzu, a non-native, invasive species, has been added to the USWildflowers database (01/09/2011.)  Scientific name is Pueraria montana.  It’s also known by the common names  Kudzu-vine, Foot-a-Night Vine, and Vine that ate the South.  Photo below was taken in Walker County, GA on September 16, 2010.

Low-Hop Clover – Trifolium campestre – Added to USWildflowers Database

Low-Hop, a non-native species, has been added to the USWildflowers database (01/04/2011.)  Scientific name is Trifolium campestre.  It’s also known by the common names  Field Clover, Large Hop Clover, and Hop Trefoil.  Photo below was taken at Reed Branch Wet Meadow Preserve, Towns County, GA on April 30, 2010.

Photo from March 2010. Location: The Pocket, Walker County, GA..  While Hepatica blossoms are most commonly white, they also will be found in pink, and various shades of blue.

Black-Billed Magpie #Birds

The Black-Billed Magpie, Pica hudsonia, is a common bird in the west.  However, since we don’t have them in the east, I always enjoy observing this member of the crow family (Corvidae) while we’re in Boise.  Aside from the black and white color, one of the eye-catching features of this bird while in flight is the long scissor-like tail.
