I was excited to see my first Columbine of the season in bloom. Several plants were forming their blossoms, like in the photo here, but one plant along the horse trail had several blossoms open. Read on for the full list of what I remember blooming today.

The Pocket at Pigeon Mountain 2011 – Game On! #wildflowers
What a difference a few weeks with some warm weather makes! On Feb 13 we made a trip to The Pocket and there was still a little snow on the ground and no sign even of Harbinger of Spring. I made a quick trip down to The Pocket this morning to check on the status, and the wildflower season has begun! Read on…
The Pocket – No Early Spring Here
We took advantage of some beautiful but chilly weather the past two weekends with a couple of short trips down to The Pocket at Pigeon Mountain. The picture from yesterday is a pretty good status update: still winter.

04/14/2010 Wildflower Status Update on The Pocket
Work and grandkid schedule have left time only for a quick trip down to The Pocket on Wednesday evening. My primary purpose was to determine if the Bellwort down there is Large-flowered or Perfoliate (mission accomplished.) We also took a spin around the boardwalk and made a trip north of the parking area, but did not get up the horse trail toward the falls, so I’m unable to update the status of flowers found along that trail.

In addition to showing me two more wildflowers sites on Pigeon Mountain, I picked up two new species at The Pocket. One of those was the Roundleaf Yellow Violet.

03/13/2010 The Pocket at Pigeon Mountain – Bursting with Potential
The Georgia Botanical Society’s annual trek to The Pocket is on March 27 this year, and with the state of things last Saturday I was beginning to worry, so Cindy and I braved the cold and rain to make a status check in the boardwalk area on Saturday, March 13. For those who read the last chapter 1st – I breathed a sigh of relief.
03/06/2010 The Pocket at Pigeon Mountain
Add common chickweed to Hepatica and Harbinger of Spring as the wildflowers in bloom in this late-starting season at The Pocket on Pigeon Mountain. There is a lot of foliage pushing up, including the start of baby leaves of Trout Lily. A huge area of beautiful Hepatica are blooming along the base of the bluff above the horse trail.
I can’t get enough of the beautiful sharp-lobed hepatica this spring, and not just because it’s almost the only thing blooming…
