Today I came across three clusters of Yellow Fringed Orchid (Platanthera ciliaris) on our pine flatwoods forestland in northeastern Alachua County, FL. About 50 plants.
Last year I only saw two in one spot. I see where this orchid is fire-dependent.
The areas where the orchids are located have had 1 wildfire (2007) and two prescribed fires – December 2012 and May 2015.
Hello,
Last year I posted about finding 50 Yellow Fringed Orchid (Platanthera ciliaris) on our 80-acres of pine flatwoods in Alachua County, FL. And only see two in 2018. Today, (08-08-2020) we did a count of the current blooming Yellow fringed orchids. Had a count of 75 plants in four areas. The most we have seen.
We have prescribed fires done by the Florida Forest Service, and those burns have made a big difference in understory plants over the last 8 years. Much more diversity and numbers.
