Hey, I was wondering why chimaphila maculata can be called spotted wintergreen since the leaves are striped. I was taught that ID many years ago and am still curious. Ta! Robbin
Yep, me too. I speculated over on the detail page about whether the brown spots that frequently occur on the petals are the source of that common name.
Found a clump of these in Haddam, Ct this year 2018, blooming in early July in the shade in heavy leaf matter. Beautiful but small.
I have several clumps of this near a creek in Asheville, NC, elevation about 2200 ft, blooming now (June 23). The leaves are very shiny with strong variegation. So glad to find out what they are! Are they unusual for my area?
No, these aren’t particularly uncommon, but most of us rarely run into them while they are blooming.
