Found small covering of Deep Violet Dwarf Larkspur on a ridge road at Flynn’s Lick, Tennessee.
Would like to know when the plant itself starts to grow, as I believe the leaves of the plant are poisness to livestock before the flower comes on and can be seen?thank you(we live in southern Oregon)
From a 1941 document from the Oregon State System of Higher Education, Federal Cooperative Extension Service, Oregon State College at Corvallis – “Most of the stock losses result in the early spring, probably due to two reasons : First, there is less other forage available at that time; and second, the first leaves of the plants are apparently most poisonous. After the plants have matured, there is little danger of poisoning even if cattle are grazed in heavily infested areas.”
