Cindy and I headed down to The Pocket today not only because I needed to get an update published, but because it was an absolutely beautiful day. And the flowers did not disappoint.
The full list of what I found blooming, more or less in the date order I expect to find them blooming. (Click on the hyper-linked scientific name to go to the page with more photos/information on that species.)
- Cutleaf Toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) – Almost gone.
- Star Chickweed (Stellaria pubera) – A few blooming here and there.
- Rue Anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides) Plentiful.
- Long-spurred Violet (Viola rostrata) – Plentiful along the “horse trail”.
- Canada Violet (Viola canadensis) – Plentiful, becoming dominant.
- Smooth Yellow Violet (Viola pubescens) – Plentiful.
- Common Blue Violet – Plentiful.
- Virginia Bluebell (Mertensia virginica) – More fruits than flowers.
- Heartleaf Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) – A few, but getting long in the tooth.
- Wood Poppy, aka Celandine Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum) – Some still blooming, but hurry if you want to see these.
- Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) – Still quite a few, but turning from “Geranium” to “Cranesbill”.
- Cumberland Spurge (Euphorbia mercurialina) – Still quite a few, but most now have the swollen ovary showing.
- Plantain-leaf Pussytoes (Antennaria plantaginifolia) – Still blooming, but many going to seed.
- Trailing Trillium (Trillium decumbens) – Plentiful.
- Bishop’s Cap (Mitella diphylla) – Still blooming, but all the way to the top now.
- Sweet Betsy (Trillium cuneatum) – Peak.
- Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora) – A few plants blooming, easier to find fruit than flowers.
- Redbud (Cercis canadensis) – Almost gone.
- Robin’s Plantain (Erigeron pulchellus) – Still plenty blooming, but some in seed.
- Violet Wood Sorrel (Oxalis violacea) – Still plentiful.
- Wild Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricata) – Plentiful.
- Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) – Peak.
- Bent White Trillium (Trillium flexipes) – Probably peak, or just past.
- False Garlic (Nothoscordum bivalve) – Plentiful.
- Round-leaved Ragwort – I think! (Packera obovata) Plentiful.
- Purple Phacelia (Phacelia bipinnatifida) – In decline.
- Woodland Stonecrop (Sedum ternatum) – Peak – most plants with all blossoms fully open.
- Dwarf Iris (Iris cristata) – Quite a few, but fewer than a week ago.
- Dogwood (Cornus florida) – Blooming.
- Wild Hyacinth (Camassia scilloides) – Peak. Most flowers except the top-most open, but a few plant with none open. Magnificent display.
- Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) – Peak.
