Quick List of Wildflowers at The Pocket – 02/16/2013

Just under two weeks ago (2/4)  I reported that Harbinger of Spring and Hepatica were blooming at The Pocket at Pigeon Mountain, the beginning of an early spring.  We made another trip down there today, and things are continuing to develop.  This post has the list of what we saw blooming or getting ready to bloom.

Cutleaf Toothwort - Cardamine concatenata

Cutleaf Toothwort – Cardamine concatenata – on Feb 16, 2013

  • One Virginia Bluebell has flower buds; much foliage.
  • A Blue Cohosh with flower buds
  • Hepatica blooming everywhere, but certainly not peak.  Saw a couple blue ones; all we saw before were white.
  • Cutleaf Toothwort starting to bloom, shown above.
  • Carolina Spring Beauties starting to bloom; didn’t find any fully open, but a number with blossoms starting to open.
  • Chickweed – quite a few more blooming than we saw on Feb 4.
  • A single Foamflower just beginning to open its flowers.  This was the same plant as photographed as the first one we found last year on Feb 29.
  • A single  Violet.  I did not take time to try to determine the species, but I suspect it was Viola blanda.
